The cricket section got away to a good start due to the fact that we inherited an almost complete cricket team which from 1960 till 1966 was known to many as the East Tamaki Social Club and fortunately most of these fellows were very active although more aged members of the Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club today.
This group consisted of Charlie Turvey, Warren Bartlett, Jack Chap-pell, Cos Sowter, Dave Fin lay son, Fred Imms, Lin Mclvor, Sid Norton, Harry Manning, Ted Winstanly, Ken Ferguson, Bob McKee, Dave Hieatt and Brian Ferguson. This fine body of cricketers were joined by Stan Klink, Graham McLeod, Brian Codyre, Keith Andrews, Kevin Currie, Ace Puata, George Easter-brook, Morrie Rich, Dave Marr and Jim Taggart and so it goes on.
This section has had some great trips away over the years, the first to Petone which came about through the arrival at the club of a past president of our club Wilf Cramner who during his time with the cricket section kept it humming along very well. We did enjoy those encounters with the Petone lads over the years - trips to New Plymouth, Napier, Hamilton, Glendene & Waiuku will also be remembered as great social occasions by all of those who took part in them. Ask Barry Moir of his Wellington experience and if you could get anything out of Dave Wilson it would be a good story, for good measure Jim Morison could probably tell one or two as well.
Wives and girlfriends have always been great support to this section, and even today's team enjoys this support.
Cricket has endeavoured to cater for all Ladies with Mixed Cricket Teams, Social and Serious. Thinking back to the ladies games one can recall seeing Betty, Gaye, Chris, Fay, Lola, Nona and others trotting round after a cricket ball and even in fancy dress much fun those days and they did have some victories as well.
Inter Club cricket was played for a while but this did not carry on due mainly to lack of interest however we still kept on and we do have inter club games with Onehunga, Mangere, Otahuhu and Howick.
Apart from the regular turn out of Players who make the day, many support people are needed and as said before this section is well supported and one should remember the great support given this section by Darkie McCown, now being carried On by his three sons Terry, Bruce and Max. Another whose contribution was greatly appreciated for his hours at the wicket our thanks to Jim Morison.
We are now starting to see the sons of some of our members gracing the wicket and this is great and the future of this section I am certain is assured.
To those of you who will be part of the next 25 years of Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club Cricket all of us from the last 25 years say to you we hope you enjoy the friendship and the enjoyment that we all have had.
